Employee training – methods and tips
Qualified knowledge is the basis for professional work and must be acquired on every floor of a company. Regular training is therefore essential. Safety precautions or other news relevant to the entire workforce can be communicated through employee training.
For financial or content reasons, it is not always possible for an external professional to take over the implementation, but internal managers can provide information on their own. The following tips explain to what extent this is done professionally and at eye level.
First of all, it is important that you, the manager, are interested in this topic and perceive the training as a lively event. The employees quickly notice whether you find this training interesting and focus their attention on this factor. If you radiate indifference and a sense of duty, the employees will not find the event exciting either and will take less information from the group with them.
But also consider which messages are important to your employees and how best to package them. You should not over- or underchallenge your audience. If they are overburdened, they will have a negative feeling of failure and will not be able to identify with the goal of the training. If, however, they are underchallenged, they feel that the appointment is purposeless and will switch off more quickly. For this reason it is necessary to convince the employees of the relevance of the innovation. Ask questions that make you think and that have no obvious solution.
Thanks to the involvement of the participants, their attention is increased. It was already known at school: Frontal teaching is no fun and loses the students. Put this insight into practice in your concept. Since there is a loss of attention after about ten minutes, you should only speak for ten minutes and then have the employees carry out reflective tasks in group work and repeat this pattern with each topic block.
A positive effect of this method is that the cognitive processing during the processing of the tasks allows the newly learned to be stored better. In addition, examples that visualize the problem or the solution can be included in these phases. It is also helpful to use different media to offer variety and to avoid a monotonous process.
In addition, the different senses of the employees can be addressed by this change. Models can be used, for example, to address the haptic sense, while a PowerPoint presentation is aimed at visual perception. Make sure, however, that a topic block does not contain several media. This can seem restless.
Ultimately, it is always good advice to write down key words from the topic blocks on a whiteboard and point them out in the summary. The question for which news it is worthwhile to call up employee training sessions depends on individual settings. If a simple notification is sufficient, mails or internal platforms are often used. If, however, you need to give a short briefing where a training is not worthwhile because the information is conveyed in five minutes, this does not mean that you have to go to every employee.
