Self-leadership – as critical as ever

Selbstführung – so akut wie nie zuvor

In the current situation, self-leadership is more prominent than ever before. Why? Because most of us are currently working from home and suddenly have to learn to work with very little external control. Suddenly, there is a lack of a supervisor providing guidance, the structured office routine, and the predetermined processes we usually have. The question is, can you lead yourself effectively to still achieve your goals and work in a structured manner?

Self-leadership is multifaceted

Many people associate self-leadership with time management. If you have good time management, you automatically achieve your goals. However, self-leadership is much more than that. Of course, time management is a part of it. Because with proper time management, you not only reach your goals but also do so within the given time. Self-leadership also means having the personal skills to motivate oneself, to know one’s resources, and to activate them. Can you motivate yourself to wake up early in the morning and start working? Can you motivate yourself to get up after a leisurely lunch break on the balcony and continue? Do you know where to focus to achieve your goals and what resources you need?

All of these are components of self-leadership. But if self-leadership skills are not sufficiently developed, there is a risk that productivity in the home office will decline over time. Because the less external control there is, the better one must be at self-regulation. And that is precisely the case with the home office. But therein also lies a huge opportunity for all of us. Because now is the perfect opportunity for every employee to expand their self-management skills and learn to regulate themselves. And for leaders, there is also the opportunity to ensure that their employees develop their self-management skills to work productively and effectively from home in the long term.

The 7 Strategies of Self-Leadership

To improve your self-leadership skills, we have developed 7 strategies that are guaranteed to be successful. One strategy is setting goals, for example. Goals are the future visions that are personally important to us. They guide our actions and trigger our inner readiness to overcome obstacles on the way to achieving our goals. You first need a clear idea of what you really want. Another strategy is to activate your willpower. Willpower mobilizes mental resources that are expended when encountering internal resistance or unexpected external obstacles during goal pursuit. With your willpower, you can overcome your inner resistance.
